PAV | Pressure Aging Vessel

Long term accelerated aging in a pressure aging container | PAV

This practice is designed to simulate in-service oxidative aging that occurs in bituminous binders during pavement maintenance. The residue from this conditioning practice can be used to estimate the physical or chemical properties of asphalt binders after several years of aging in the field.

The test covers the conditioning of bituminous binders to simulate accelerated oxidation by aging using pressurized air and high temperature. This is intended to simulate the rheology changes that occur in asphalt binders during oxidative aging in service, but may not accurately simulate the rates of aging. It is normally intended for use with residues from the D2872 test method (RTFOT), designed to simulate the aging of binders under the effect of air and heat.
