Thin Film Oven Test | TFOT

The method measures the combined effects of heat and air on a thin film of bitumen or bituminous binder in permanent renewal. It simulates the hardening that a binder undergoes during mixing in a mixing plant.

The effects of heat and air are determined from the variation in mass of the sample (expressed as a percentage, or from the evolution of the characteristics of the binder such as penetrability (EN 1426), the point of ball softening.

– Ring (EN 1427) or dynamic viscosity (EN 12596), measured before and after passing through the oven.

This test is fundamental in checking the compliance of pure bitumens with standard EN 12591.

This oven is used to determine the mass loss of oil and bituminous compounds when heated to a specific temperature.
