Settling Tendency

Determination of settling tendency of bituminous emulsions.

A volume of 500 ml of emulsion is placed in a test tube with lateral arms closed by a stopper, protected from light and at room temperature for n days. At the end of the incubation period, the upper fraction is collected by the upper lateral arm, while the intermediate fraction is eliminated by the lower lateral arm. The lower emulsion fraction is then collected by inverting the test piece.

The two lower and upper fractions are subjected to the water content determination test (Dean Stark, Moisture analyzer.)

The settling tendency corresponds to the difference in water content of the two fractions.
